Hurricane Harvey Creative Relief

In partnership with Fort Bend Recovers with Creativity, ARTreach connected a series of arts programs to residents throughout Fort Bend County who were affected by Hurricane Harvey.  Fort Bend Recovers with Creativity is a workgroup under Fort Bend Recovers (the official Fort Bend County long-term recovery group) umbrella, born out of a collaboration within the Fort Bend Recovers Spiritual & Mental Health workgroup. In addition to ARTreach, board and team members include representatives from Attack Poverty,  Easter Seals Greater Houston,  Fort Bend County Health and Human Services, Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management, Texana Center, and many others.

ARTreach coordinated and delivered music and visual art programs, as a result of efforts by Artist Manager Kristin Miller and Executive Director, Nicole Moraw. Artist Jill Brown delivered a collaborative collage program to 12 participants in Needville. The workshop focused on creating meaningful collages from a variety of paper materials  brought by the participants.  Jill commented, “At a recent workshop for Hurricane Recovery, a participant, while working on a collage, shared very personal information with us that she had been holding inside. She was able to discuss her emotions while she worked and remarked how cathartic the experience was for her.” Drumming workshops were led by artist Joseph Dixon, focusing on an interactive drum circle experience designed for people of all ages. These programs served over 75 participants, providing an outlet for self-expression and social engagement while promoting a healthy alternative to physical exercise. Artist Mark Deleon managed oversight of collaborative painting programs to many participants of all ages in 5 locations throughout Fort Bend County. This program was inspired by the initial painting, "Shalom," created by artist and ARTreach Board Director, Sara Beth Baca. Each one reflects the recovery and resilience of Fort Bend County and its residents as they rebuild and recover after Harvey. There have been five paintings, created with supervision from Mark Deleon. He will deliver a live painting performance for the last painting in the series in September in Katy.
