Books Alive!: 2020 Musical and StoryTime Program

To better serve the ideal of unifying and healing through the arts, Books Alive! is an Artist in Residence, partnering with ARTreach, who seeks and provides funding for subsidized Books Alive! performances for the communities of Harris, Fort Bend, and other Houston Area Counties. Throughout the spring and summer of 2020, Books Alive! will present, "Princess Penelope's Parrot," adapted from the children's book written by Helen Lester. Performances will be located at elementary schools throughout Fort Bend and Harris Counties this spring, then at Harris County Public Library locations in June and July.

The theatre group also successfully piloted its newest program in 2019 to children in hospitals, called StoryTime Musicals. StoryTime is an abbreviated version of a fully staged Books Alive! production. A Books Alive! touring production is a 45-minute fully staged original musical performance based on a beloved children’s book. StoryTime is offered for a more intimate experience and consists of a dynamic reading of the book with characters brought to life to sing the original songs that punctuate the story.  Designed in collaboration with Arts-in-Medicine professionals, these 15-minute petite versions are ideal for bedside and have had huge success at MD Anderson Cancer Center and at many Texas Children's Hospital locations. Upcoming StoryTime musicals at both Texas Children’s Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center are scheduled for spring, summer and fall of 2020. Texas Children’s locations will include their Main Campus, West Campus and The Woodlands.

ARTreach is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides mentoring and art-related programs to a growing population of children at risk, children and adults with special needs, the elderly and others in need.
